Linguistic Recommendation -- Translation Bureau of Canada
Format for writing telephone numbers
Since the introduction of 10-digit dialling, it is no longer appropriate to use parentheses around the area code.
In English and French, the area code should be followed by a hyphen instead of being enclosed within parentheses: 819-555-5555.
This is the same format proposed by
- the Canadian Numbering Administrator; and
- the North American Numbering Plan Administrator.
These two organizations work with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
The recommendation applies to all telephone numbers in Canada, as well as numbers for
- cell phones;
- facsimiles; and
- toll-free and long distance calls such as 1-800, 1-888, 1-900, 1-976, etc.: 1-800-555-5555.
Where and when
Ten-digit dialling is accepted almost everywhere and is becoming the norm in Canada.
