As a youngster, all of the literature we had at home was in French (understandingly enough since I was raised by French-speaking parents in a very French milieu). But like most kids my age, adventure short stories with illustrations (aka comic books) had a particular allure of their own; and, the majority of them were published in English. This didn't deter me. I bought them regularly with income from my newspaper delivery route and 'read' them many, many times, even before I could actually read!!! I could follow the story line from simply 'reading' the pictures. And then suddenly, one day, I was 'reading' a Little Lulu comic book and lo and behold, I realized that I could actually read and understand the words written in those little balloons! A language decoding breakthrough as it were.
The beauty of the Tintin stories is that on top of their being fantastic adventure stories (I still love reading them by the way), they are now available in multiple languages. Such that you or one of your young protégés can sit down and enjoy them side-by-side, taking in these wonderful adventures and learning to read a foreign language at the same time. Try it!!! You won't regret it, I promise you.
