Languages Spoken: English & French
Ontario has no official language, but English is considered the de facto language. Numerous French language services are available under the French Language Services Act of 1990 in designated areas where sizable francophone populations exist.
The majority of Ontarians are of British or other European descent. Slightly less than 5% of the population of Ontario is Franco-Ontarian, that is those whose native tongue is French, although those with French ancestry account for 11% of the population.
In the most recent census, Ontario's ethnic diversity breaks down as follows:
English (24.7%); Canadian (23.0%); Scottish (17.5%); Irish (16.5%); French (11.2%); German (9.5%); Italian (7.2%); Chinese (5.4%); East Indian (4.8%); Dutch (Netherlands) (4.1%); Polish (3.9%); Ukrainian (2.8%); North American Indian (2.6%); Portuguese (2.4%); Filipino (1.8%); British, not included
Elsewhere (1.7%); Jamaican (1.6%); Welsh (1.5%); Jewish (1.5%); Russian (1.4%); Hungarian (Magyar) (1.3%); Spanish (1.2%); Greek (1.1%); American (USA) (0.9%); Pakistani (0.8%); Métis (0.7%); Sri Lankan (0.7%); Vietnamese (0.7%); Romanian (0.7%); African, not included elsewhere (0.6%); Finnish (0.6%); Korean (0.6%); and, Croatian (0.6%).
